Productions Deer and Turkey Expo
By Richard "The Bee" Becraft

The 10th
Annual Indiana Deer & Turkey Exposition fits
right in with the largest indoor sports show in
the U.S. (the Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel
Show). The Deer & Turkey Expo brings exciting
features and seminars from the top experts! From
nationally renowned bow hunters and gun dog
demonstrations to deer scoring and an indoor
archery range, the Indiana Deer & Turkey Expo
will bring the great outdoors to the heart of
America!
I attended this event on
Saturday and it certainly delivered all it advertised to
some degree or another. I was most interested in the Indiana
Deer and Turkey Expo and hunting aspect of the show although
I own a boat and fish too. First off as a deer and turkey
enthusiast I was a little disappointed in the numbers of
call makers exhibiting and numbers of turkey calling events.
May be it's just an unavoidable comparison after attending a
few NWTF conventions but those hunting events are what I
wanted to see, so if you call me biased I won't deny it.
30-40 foot yachts are nice to walk by and look at but where
would you put a trolling motor on something like that?
I think they tried to cover too many aspects of separating
an outdoor enthusiast from their money for just one show to
do justice to any one of the several topics they aim for
with this one event. |

Now I did get to put several faces with names
and screen names familiar from years of posting
on popular Indiana hunting and fishing message
boards and their areas of expertise with out
question held up to what I'd expected. I met Bud
Fields at the Frogg Toggs booth and he spent
quite a bit of time explaining the make up of
this rain wear. I can't say I've used those,
YET, but I can say the concept made sense to me.
I'd sure like to try those out some time on a
lake some where around Tennessee, Kentucky, or
Indiana pulling in some stripers or wipers in
this very early spring weather. Those just might
come in pretty handy. Might even be a wash
financially if it figured to save me a doctor
bill from fishing all day soaking wet in the
cold. Thing the wife will buy that?
I also made a pretty lengthy stop by the Turkey
Tamer turkey calls booth where Mark Taylor put
on an outstanding exhibition of slates and box
turkey calls. I like these calls and they are
made right here in Indiana by a native Hoosier
turkey slayer and call maker. Now that what I'm
looking for when I hand over a ticket to the
Indiana Deer and Turkey Expo. Mark really made
it look easy and sound as
sweet
as a couple of drum sticks plopping on the
dinner plate. I know you are calling all that
some pretty "golden gab" about right now so I'll
cut to the chase, those Turkey Tamer calls were
good enough for me to open my own wallet and
plop down the cash for a purple heart wood box
call to call my very own. That's about the best
recommendation I ever give any thing. I'll let
you know what the turkeys think of it in a
couple of months but I've got high hopes of it
spoiling their whole day.
The wall of fame where they had some awesome
Hoosier deer mounts was worth the ticket price
all alone. If any out of staters are reading
this, those all came from Pike county IL.
There's no deer in Indiana. The deer scoring
area appeared to be a model of efficiency from
where I was standing. Unfortunately that was way
out side the scoring area with the rest of the
hungry mob of coulda, woulda, and shoulda guys
wishing we were getting a nice rack scored this
year.
Well there is always next year, men, and here's
wishing bigger, better, and more of them to us
all. See you next year when I bring in MY trophy
to get it scored.
