I had the distinct pleasure of visiting with Mike and being a guest at his facility at Allagash Sporting Camps in June of 2006. This retreat is spectacular. Newly renovated lodge and cabins greet you as you turn the corner but you better open your eyes wide at the millions of acres of unspoiled beauty before you.

Located on the banks of the Allagash River in Allagash Maine, the Allagash Sporting Camps have something you can't build from a stick of wood. It has personality and hospitality that is second to none. Whether your coming for a canoe trip or tracking down a trophy whitetail buck, the welcome mat comes out. I look forward to returning to the Allagash again soon.

During the spring and summer months, fishing and canoeing are part of the offerings at the Allagash Sporting Camps. Guided trips are available as well as transportation.

In the above photo Mike has his fleet of Old Town canoes lined up and ready for action. Right after this photo was taken, more than half of these crafts were taken up river with a group of Girl Scouts on a weekend adventure down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

The newly renovated main lodge is spectacular. Mike has put hours of time not only in the construction by all the decorating and fine touches to make it unique. This photo shows the front of the main lodge decorated with antlers and other collectables. In the view, the front several feet is a large addition that seats about 20 hungry people. It also can be used as a classroom or meeting space.

Spacious and modern kitchens are welcomed amenities in the cabins that are part of the property. As you can see the kitchen provides ample room for all your needs.

Below shows bunks with more than enough room to stow your gear and spread out and relax.

Inside the main lodge, you are greeted by a friendly staff of cooks. Helen is getting ready to serve up some fresh Maine lobster along with New York sirloins. I couldn't seem to get away from all the fresh baked desserts.

From the kitchen leading down the hallway to more bunk rooms is a sight not seen by many people. The picture can better tell its own story than my words.

After a day in the field fishing, hunting, canoeing or hiking, there's nothing more enjoyable than coming back to camp and spending a few minutes gathered around a brisk outdoor campfire sharing war stories. Ever noticed how the fish get longer, the rack of horns bigger and the whitewater faster when told around a campfire?

While I was visiting the Allagash Sporting Camps, Mike was hosting the Annual Big Buck Tracking School put on by the Benoit Brothers of Vermont. In this photo Bob McMasters of New Hampshire instructs a group of hunters in GPS use. The Allagash has big woods and knowing how to get back home is a good think to know. The new addition to the lodge not only seats hungry outdoors people for meals but as was done here, it doubles as a classroom.
