Electronics
for Canoes
By Jack Ryan
Can't get more
basic than a canoe can you? But did you ever
wonder if there were really any fish under
there? Maybe not on a fast moving river but
maybe paddling a little lake looking for that
shelf or trying to get exactly over that
structure? If only ya had some sonar on there.
Hang it over the side and it doesn't work half
the time, forget about while you are moving.
Well what if you could shoot right through the
hull? What about a sonar built with the
intention of being mobile right from the
beginning?
Well why not use your ice-fishing rig?
The transducer has a lip that catches just
perfect on that pvc to hold it about a quarter
to half inch off the bottom so it doesn't get
scratched or beat up. I cut the pvc about 3.25"
long and epoxy it to the bottom, after sanding
and alcohol scrub to clean the canoe bottom. It
holds just a dab of water to make the sonar
connection through the plastic canoe bottom.
|
I put one of these at
each end of the canoe so I can paddle in either seat
and all you do is sit down, dab a little water in
the "well" and drop the transducer in. Be sure to
epoxy it near the end where the bottom flexes the
least to avoid breaking it loose. These Vexlar's
come with their own battery that will last all day
on the ice, who knows how long in warm weather.
This shoots right through that plastic like it's not
even there and you can still pick that up and make a
side "shot" with it if you are wondering if there
are fish under a shelf, pier, or tree limbs. |
